Meet OUR Staff
Katherine Sadler leads the King Garden Designs communications and content development team with the aim of broadening the reach of KGD’s educational and inspirational landscape offerings. She brings a wealth of knowledge in web presence development, content creation, media relations, artist management and network collaboration to her role as Director of Communications. Katherine comes from a background in developing the careers of world class performing artists, and once served as the Assistant Director of the Alan D. Marks Center for Career Services and Entrepreneurship at the prestigious Juilliard School. Katherine is currently a doctoral candidate at Teachers College Columbia University where she is researching entrepreneurship education for artists.
She comes from a family of gardeners and believes in the sustainable preservation of ecological systems from gardens, to farms, to parks.
Betsy serves as an expert design consultant for King Garden Designs, Inc. She earned her bachelor's degree in Comprehensive Design from University of California, Davis. Upon graduation she was an assistant designer in an Interior Design Firm in the San Francisco Bay Area and worked on drafting and supporting designers. In addition, Betsy has worked for the UC Davis Architects and Engineers office in a variety of jobs ranging from administrative tasks to architecture and construction support.
Betsy supports King Garden Designs in several ways. She provides horticultural research and writes content for our online educational program. She researches client properties and historical information about some older estates and homes. In addition, Betsy corresponds with vendors to learn about materials and construction specifications from our suppliers. Finally, she supports the company through research and planning for our continued education travel and attendance.
Betsy is a proud mother and has been a business owner, teacher and designer. She and her husband have three children. In addition to her design background, Betsy started and owned her own art studio in the Princeton area of central New Jersey. She also helped start-up an art business through hiring, creating artwork for the gallery and teaching. She has succeeded in starting and running successful businesses and brings this expertise to support the business operations of King Garden Designs. Betsy has a strong foundation in gardening, art and math which make her an asset to the team.
Entrepreneur and educator, Jess Fontanini-Cardone joins the King Garden Designs team as the executive assistant to owner Charles Sadler as well as the primary office manager.
Jess brings to the company her own experience as a business owner having run a catering business and, more recently, starting a photography business with her husband. Jess began cooking at age 12 and parlayed that passion and creativity into her businesses. She plans to revive her clean-eating blog and include even more travel and restaurant reviews. Her interest in food is a natural complement to the efforts of KGD to promote sustainable homegrown food gardens, and her experience in education at the elementary and college level will support the King Garden Designs’ ongoing educational program development. Jess’ joint photography venture with her husband has focused on event photography, though they both are drawn to nature photography, and her artistic eye is an additional asset for the ongoing evolution of King Garden Designs’ services. Jess is a mom who loves being the person her daughter can look up to and depend on. She has also worked for Pace University document services department, and she also has experience as a substitute teacher; her organizational skills and professionalism are key assets for her role in client relations for King Garden Designs. The whole team look forward to growing with Jess and supporting her creative endeavors as she supports the office.
Christine Chu is a Design Assistant at King Garden Designs. Her love of outdoor spaces and plants took root while attending college in Northampton, MA. She finished her undergraduate career with an Environmental Science and Policy degree in the spring of 2018 and is a proud Smithie.
Christine was given opportunities to be involved in research as part of the Environmental Science and Policy Department. Her most notable research project analyzed the sustainability of landscape practices on campus. Along with her teammates, she conducted a series of interviews with important stakeholders of the college to gather information and identify perceived institutional impediments to sustainable change. The project was awarded the Florence Augusta Merriam Bailey Prize for innovative and collaborative approaches to solving environmental and sustainability problems.
Throughout the course of her senior year, Christine worked at her college’s Botanic Garden as an assistant to the greenhouse maintenance staff. She has planted, weeded, watered, mulched, and has even participated in one of the largest American Chestnut restoration projects in the country. She feels that spending time working in the garden has given her valuable experiences and perspectives that she can apply to her career and interests. She loves working with people and plants and wants to dedicate her life to better understand the relationship between humans and the environment.
Christine’s diverse background in environmental science and art has shaped her body of work. In her free time, she likes to paint landscapes and dabble in nature photography during her travels to new places. She first became fascinated with landscape design after taking a landscape studio course, as it allowed her to use her drawing skills and creativity to help others appreciate plants and the outdoors. Her long-term goals are to create and sustain healthy relationships between the environment and the community. She is constantly inspired by her surroundings and hopes to increase her knowledge of gardening and to further develop her design skills at King Garden Designs. In the future, she sees herself pursuing a master’s degree in Landscape Architecture.
